Publications

On this section of our website you are able to view and download some of the reports and other documents which we publish. These include the administration of elections in the UK, policy reviews recommending changes to existing practice, evaluation of new electoral procedures and guidance on registration and financial controls.

  • Corporate publications: Our annual reports, corporate plans and stakeholder magazine.
  • Briefings: Four page documents that look at topical issues such as citizenship and referendums and are designed especially for politicians and other policy makers.
  • Consultation papers: A list of any current open consultations alongside an archive of all previous consultations from 2001-7.  
  • Factsheets: Two page information factsheets are available on specific topics such as registration, postal voting and elected mayors. These are designed for general use, and may be useful for students and teachers.
  • Policy reports: Contains reports from policy review projects, including consultation papers and final reports.
  • Research reports: Contains all our published research, including research funded by us and carried out by other organisations. Many of the research reports look at public attitudes to voting and elections.
  • Election reports: Contains all election reports, such as the reports on electoral pilot schemes.
  • Guidance: For professionals working in the elections field, including party agents, electoral administrators and constituency officials. You may also want to look at our regulatory issues guidance which provides advice for political parties, candidates, regulated donees and third parties relating to election expenditure and donations. These guidances set out the respective requirements under the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act 2000, and other relevant legislation.
  • Periodic electoral reviews (links to The Boundary Committee website): Recommendations to us, from The Boundary Committee for England on adjusting electoral imbalances.
  • Electoral Commission circulars: These circulars are produced by us and are issued to electoral administrators on a regular basis. Circulars are used to issue formal guidance or request information to fulfil statutory duties.
  • Electoral Administration alerts: We issue alerts to electoral administrators on a regular basis. Alerts are used to alert recipients to an announcement, publication, event or opportunity; advise on the progress of legislation or policy development; solicit non-statutory information or responses; or advise of action taken by other persons or bodies.
